Citrus mini quilt

I finished this improv’ mini quilt which is my first composition made at the workshop I attended last week with Rayna Gillman. You can read more about it here.

I mostly used a grey quilting thread adding small touches of pink and yellow as well. They are Aurifil threads in two different weights (40 wt and 50 wt).

I first quilted a spiral around the rectangle you can see below, every half inch.

And finally decided to subdvide in quarter inch to add more texture.

I finished it with a non visible binding which is a finishing I rarely choose since I never know how to deal with the corners …

Luna Lovequilts - Improv' mini quilt - Non visible binding - Corners

Here is how I did : I first machine stitched stripes at top and bottom of the quilt. Then I folded and fixed them by hand on the back of the quilt. Once top and bottom were completed I repeated these steps for the two sides, having a few layers of fabric and batting to handle with in the corners … 🙁

Since I remembered that, ages ago, a friend of mine showed me another way to fix the binding and I even found the example she had made. I will try next time …

  1. Sophie, this turned out great. I really like your quilting how you highlighted the rectangle by quilting around it. The addition of the colored threads is nice too. The facing method looks very doable.

  3. I posted on my blog several years ago on how to deal with the corners when sewing on a facing style binding. It was my post on 5/14/13 http://pattythequiltlady dot Blogspot dot com if you are interested. Let me know if you have any questions. Your mini quilt turned out great!
