Pleated pouch

Do you remember this pleated pouch I already shared in a post late November ?

I sewed another version in the meantime ! You can find the tutorial I used on Skip to my Lou blog. I made two changes though. First I added interfacing to stiffen the pouch. Usually I add it to the exterior pieces but because of the pleats I chose for this pattern to fuse it to the lining.

The second thing I added is a wrist strap. I wanted to try this tutorial written by Svetlana at SOTAK Handmade blog for a while and thought a strap was suitable for this pouch shape.

I was anxious to finish my first piece and used hardware I had on hand. That is to say a too large D-ring and a too narrow swivel hook …  And instead of making a seam to keep the swivel hook from sliding around I used a rivet like for leather straps. Finally not too keen on the idea …

I ordered sets of matching D-ring and swivel hook afterwards and decided to redo this part. I made sure first with my husband that he could help me to replace easily the D-ring without unstitching the seam … Looks better on the picture below, isn’t it ? For the second pouch I cut the fabric tab shorter and it looks even better. It might seem like nitpicking but you know I am a kind of a perfectionist … 😉

The fabrics I used are mainly from Cotton and Steel. I am really happy with how they turned out and will definitely make more of them !

For our last lesson of the year I proposed to my student to make an Open Wide Zippered pouch which is a tutorial by Noodlehead. I had already used it in the past and made a version in Tula Pink Tabby Road collection.

The zipper is pretty much always attached in the same way on the patterns we worked together and so I had looked for something different. There is a little trick for having a zipper longer than the pouch.

The part I really don’t like doing is the final step, attaching the fabric tab at the end of the zipper. You have to fold a piece of fabric and then to stitch all layers together with the zipper. I tested a few ways but it is not easy to get a clean result and hide properly the raw edges …

Isn’t this little ghosts print really cute ?!
