Quiltcon 2023 – Part I

That was my fifth time attending Quiltcon and each time in a different city. The event was held in Atlanta this year.
I saw great quilts but what makes Quiltcon so special is meeting people. That was so cool to catch up and spend time with that amazing group of friends!

Chawne Kimber

The featured quilter was Chawne Kimber who is known for using words in her quilts and expressing powerful messages. Generally I am not very interested in social or political meaningful quilts. I am more drawn to the design aspect and use of colour. I am really glad that I could attend the special exhibit tour led by quilt historian Teresa Duryea Wong who is an amazing speaker. Her explanations made me understand more and appreciate Chawne Kimber’s work.

Fabric Challenge Category

I think that category was particularly successful this year. Not only the curated palette was gorgeous but the result was cohesive though very diverse because of the variety of designs, techniques and use / proportion of each colour.

Value Added by Elizabeth Ray got the third place of the category. As usual, I am not necessarily sharing the winning quilts in my articles (but I love Elizabeth Ray’s work @elizabethkray !). You can find them all by clicking this link.

We were asked to use at least four of the six challenge fabrics. Most of the quilts on display included all of them, so it was interesting to see an interpretation, Vanilla Swirl by Kelly Spell @kellyspell, using a more limited palette.

I’m usually not very fan of raw edge applique but loved the retro feel of this design, Mix Tape by Marisa Wilhelmi @marisawilhelmidesigns !

Improvisation Category

I didn’t like the Improv Category as much as usual but … I wish I had made that quilt, Interior by Melanie Tuazon @melanie.tuazon. She was inspired by the shapes created by window blinds as the light changes through the day. I love everything about it, shapes, overall effect, palette and addition of a few prints.

Another great piece was on display in that category, More Whole Than Broken by my friend Kathy Cook @kathycookquilts. This quilt is the result of experimenting with cut up inset circles.

Minimalist Design

I had three quilts accepted in the show. Cityscape on display in the Use of Negative Space category and that you can see in the background of our group picture at the beginning of the article. Shed which was made for the Fabric Challenge. And finally, Impact which I entered in the Minimalist Design category.

My friends Sarah and Tara had both a quilt in that category as well. Pictured left, Tall Poppy by Tara Glastonbury and on the right No 35 Collage – Egg and Spoon Race by Sarah Hibbert @quiltscornerstone (quilted by Christine Perrigo). If you are interested in making your own version of Tall Poppy, Tara is selling the pattern on her Etsy shop StitchandYarnStore. You can also follow her on Instagram @stitchandyarn .

Modern X Exhibit

This was a special exhibit to celebrate ten years of Quiltcon. My favorite interpretation of the modern X motif was Happy X by Clara Stoikow @bimbambuki_blog. Embroidering those bright tiny X-es was such a good idea !

In this piece, Apparition X by Julie Reuben, I loved the idea of using the quilting to form a X. She marked the X shape and then free hand stitched all-over, changing colours to bring out the X.

  5. Great collection of quilts and insights. Love that you picked a few quilts that were the top of my list but didn’t make it in the final cut. With so many people it is always interesting to see what everyone picks. Yours are a great addition to mine 😉 PS: It was lovely to meet you again! xo
