Inclination – A finished Quilt

Inclination is one of the small pieces I made especially for having some new work to show as part of ART-TEX exhibit.

Inclination est un des petits formats que j’ai réalisés spécialement pour avoir quelques nouvelles pièces à montrer dans le cadre de l’exposition ART-TEX.

It is based on one of the two designs I considered for my participation into the Pantone Quilt challenge earlier this year. I finally went for the design pictured left and created Interaction III for the challenge, while saving the other one for later.

Il est basé sur un des deux designs que j’ai envisagés pour ma participation au Pantone Quilt challenge en début d’année. J’avais opté finalement pour le design de gauche et créé Interaction III pour le challenge, tout en gardant l’autre pour plus tard.

Actually, the initial idea was simply to combine a shape with a 90-degree angle and stripes resulting in a totally abstract design. I inadvertently rotated the printed mock-up when I pinned it on my design wall though. At first sight, a stylized landscape with a mountain in the foreground appeared to me and I could not get this impression out of my head!

En fait, l’idée initiale était simplement de combiner une forme avec un angle à 90 degré et des rayures en vue d’un design totalement abstrait. J’ai cependant, sans le vouloir, tourné la maquette quand je l’ai épinglée sur mon mur de design. Au premier coup d’oeil, un paysage stylisé avec une montagne en premier plan m’est apparu et je n’ai pas réussi à sortir cette impression de ma tête !

I then decided to rework the design to make the landscape look more like our iconic view in the Vallée de Joux 😉 I added a ‘lake’ in the foreground and modified a bit the inclination of the ‘mountain’. As the use of magenta was not a requirement anymore I also changed the colours for a more serene palette.

J’ai ensuite décidé de retravailler un peu le dessin pour rendre le paysage un peu plus ressemblant à notre vue emblématique de la Vallée de Joux 😉 J’ai ajouté un “lac” au premier plan et modifié un peu l’inclinaison de la “montagne”. Comme l’utilisation du magenta n’était plus une nécessité, j’ai aussi changé les couleurs pour une palette plus calme.

As you can see, the slope is more moderate in reality. But I could say my design represent the feeling you have when you climb it 🙂

Comme vous pouvez le voir, la pente est plus modérée en réalité. Mais je pourrais dire que mon design représente l’impression qu’on a en montant au sommet 🙂

I added a print to my fabric selection as I hadn’t in my solid stash the shade I was looking for. It is a light pink with tiny blue stripes from a Tula Pink collection.

J’ai ajouté un imprimé à ma sélection de tissus car je n’avais pas dans mon stock d’unis la teinte que je recherchais. C’est un imprimé rose pâle à fines rayures bleues d’une collection de Tula Pink.

This design called for a facing finish. I took this opportunity to try a hanging sleeve tutorial written by Audrey Esarey. You can download it with this direct link on her website, Cotton & Bourbon, if you’d like to read detailed instructions. I particularly appreciated the topstitching of the crease along both long edges of the hanging sleeve. It does make the hand stitching step easier!

Ce design demandait une finition facing. J’ai profité de cette occasion pour tester un tutorial de manchon de suspension écrit par Audrey Esarey. Vous pouvez le télécharger avec ce lien direct sur son website, Cotton & Bourbon, si vous avez envie de lire les instructions détaillées. J’ai particulièrement apprécié la surpiqure du pli le long des deux longs bords du manchon. Cela facilite vraiment l’étape de couture main !
