Inspiration

Hi there ! I am back from our trip in the UK ! It has been hard to return home after three months travelling but I am slowly getting back to my routine … Though we mostly spent our time walking (in the middle of nowhere), we had planned a few days here and there for visiting cities. Here are some of the inspiring places I managed to see.

Hello ! Je suis de retour de notre voyage au Royaume-Uni ! C’était dur de rentrer après un voyage de trois mois mais je me remets tranquillement dans ma routine … Nous avons passé la plus grande partie de notre temps à marcher (au milieu de nulle part), mais nous avions prévu quelques jours par-ci par-là pour visiter des villes. Voici quelques endroits inspirants que j’ai eu l’occasion voir.

Dovecot Studios

The day before our way back, we had the chance to stop at Dovecot Studios which was closed to the public on our first stay in Edinburgh. This is the view of the tapestry studio from the balcony. A fascinating visit though unfortunately nobody was working at that time.

La veille de notre retour, nous avons eu la chance de visiter Dovecot Studios qui était fermé au public lors de notre premier passage à Edimbourg. C’est la vue du studio de tissage depuis le balcon. Une visite passionante bien que malheureusement personne ne travaillait à ce moment-là.

As a special exhibit, large-scale screen-printed panels by Pauline Caulfield were on display on the walls all around the balcony.

Une exposition temporaire, des panneaux de grande taille imprimés en sérigraphie par Pauline Caulfield étaient exposés sur les murs tout autour du balcon.

Each tapestry made by Dovecot’s weavers are woven in collaboration with an artist or designer.

Chaque tapisserie réalisée par les tisserands de Dovecot est tissée en collaboration avec un artiste ou designer.

The second special exhibit was dedicated to The Caged Bird’s Song, a tapestry created by master weavers at Dovecot Studios. It is based on a watercolour work by Chris Ofili.

La seconde exposition temporaire était dédiée à The Caged Bird’s Song, une tapisserie créée par des maîtres tisserands à Dovecot Studios. Elle est basée sur une oeuvre en aquarelle de Chris Ofili.

250 different shades of yarn were used to achieve the watercolour effect of Chris Ofili’s original design.

A plenty of details about the making of this work which was woven by five weavers over three years (2014–2017) and took more than 6000 hours.

Plein d’informations sur la réalisation de cette oeuvre qui a été tissée par cinq tisserands sur une période de trois ans (2014–2017) et a demandé plus de 6000 heures.

I loved this small piece woven by Sophie McCaffrey, an apprentice at Dovecot Studios.

J’ai adoré cette petite pièce tissée par Sophie McCaffrey, une apprentie à Dovecot Studios.

V&A Dundee

V&A Dundee is the museum of Scottish Design. It shows an interesting and varied collection of objects designed by Scottish designers. And the building itself, interior and exterior, is worth the visit!

V&A Dundee est le musée écossais du design. Il présente une collection intéressante et variée d’objets conçus par des designers écossais. Et le bâtiment lui-même, intérieur et extérieur, vaut une visite !

At a Window I (1980), a tapestry by designer Archie Brennan. A beautiful design that plays with contrasted patterns of different textiles.

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk was the special exhibit when we visited the museum.

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk était l’exposition temporaire quand nous avons visité le musée.

A fascinating exhibit that explores the story and significance of this garment.

Une exposition passionnante qui explore l’histoire et la signification de ce vêtement.

It also shows the evolution from the 17th century in Japan and how the kimono influenced fashion across the world.

Elle montre aussi l’évolution depuis le 17ème siècle au Japon et comment le kimono a influencé la mode à travers le monde.

Do Ho Suh solo exhibition

Several rooms of the Modern Art Museum of Edinburgh were dedicated to Do Ho Suh, a Korean artist. Different media were used in the works on display such as watercolours, paper sculptures and printmaking. The thread drawings, in which cotton thread is embedded in handmade paper, were amazing.

Plusieurs salles du Modern Art Museum d’Edimbourg étaient dédiées à Do Ho Suh, un artiste coréen. Différents media étaient utilisés dans les oeuvres exposées comme l’aquarelle, la sculpture papier et l’impression. Les dessins en fil, réalisés en incorporant le fil dans le papier fabriqué main, étaient incroyables.

These translucent fabric structures replicate corridors of places where the artist has lived. They are made of polyester fabric and steel.

Ces structures en tissu transparent reproduisent les corridors d’endroits où l’artiste a vécu. Elles sont réalisées en tissu polyester et métal.

Inspiration is everywhere

A trip on the Mersey River in Liverpool just because the boat is very cool!

It’s a small world

I have been in touch through social media with Cécile Denis @patchwork_inspirations, a French quilter, for eight years or so. We met in person for the first time and totally by chance at the ferry terminal on the Isle of Skye (Scotland). I had just arrived on the island and Cécile was waiting in the queue to leave. What a great moment!

Je suis en contact par les réseaux sociaux avec Cécile Denis @patchwork_inspirations, une quilteuse française, depuis environ huit ans. Nous nous sommes rencontrées pour la première fois et totalement par hasard au terminal des ferrys sur le l’île de Skye (Ecosse). Je venais d’arriver et Cécile attendait dans la file pour quitter l’île. Un super moment !
