Plus Quilt – Top finished

I don’t make very often a quilt from a pattern. Not because I don’t find any interesting patterns on the market but rather because I like designing and working in my own way.
When I saw Paige’s mini quilt, Positively Transparent, last year on her blog Quilted Blooms I loved it at first sight. So I didn’t hesitate too long when she offered a lap quilt version pattern for Modern Quilt Guild members  …

I chose colours very similar to the original since I love everything about this quilt, from design to quilting including fabric choice. I went for Essex Linen in olive for the background fabric and used for the ‘plus’ blocks some prints by Carolyn Friedlander in addition to solids. I wasn’t sure about mixing solids and prints for the transparency effect but I think it works pretty well.

I took the opportunity to work on this project last week at a three days quilting retreat in St-Maurice with some friends and made the top the first day. I didn’t plan this but the day after I bought fabrics for the backing and finished it too !

We took a little trip to the nearest quilt shop, Au Grain de Folie in Evionnaz, and I was smitten with this beautiful lime green solid from Makower Fabrics. I bought the end of the bolt hoping it would match my top and it was perfect ! :-))

Before leaving for the retreat I managed to finish the quilting on my Quilty 365 project and attached the binding. When I needed a break from cutting and piecing my new project I hand stitched the binding on the back on this one. I will post full pictures very soon but here is a glimpse for right now.

  1. Oh, Sophie, I positively love your version! The blues against the olive Essex background are lovely! And you backing, oh my! Thank you for making and sharing Positively Transparent!

  2. Wow ! Aucun doute là-dessus !
    Bonnes vacances Sophie !

  3. I absolutely LOVE Paige's quilt (and I love yours, too!!) GREAT idea for the quilt back. I haven't tried super-sizing a block yet. I've shrunk them, but never super-sized them… YET!!!
