Early in October I was on a quilting retreat in South of France and one of my projects was to start a new quilt using Debbie’s Crosscut tutorial. I had already made a table runner with this technique a couple of weeks ago.

Luna Lovequilts - Vinyle, a finished quilt inspired by Debbie's Crosscut tutorial

I prepared two surfaces, one with a light background and the other one with a dark background, in the idea to mix them afterwards. I used 9″ squares for the backgrounds (trimmed to 8.75″ after inserting 1″ stripes).

I cut 6″ squares in the surfaces and added plain squares and rectangles as well.

I wanted to try an overall spiral quilting design for a while and thought this project would be perfect for it. I traced the beginning of the spiral and then lined up using the width of the foot as a guide.

What I would do differently … I chose a very light neutral quilting thread (Aurifil Muslin) which is really perfect on the light parts. I think it stands out too much on the dark fabrics though. Maybe a slightly darker thread would be better.

It is maybe pretty obvious for you … But I had to experiment to figure it out : small imperfections are amplified at each turn of the spiral. My natural tendency is to deform the spiral and have more and more flat circles.

I made this wall hanging to replace my Pop Art quilt which doesn’t go with our new sofa. And I like very much the overall effect ! Next project for the living room : a small round patchwork rug.

This is STUNNING Sophie! Truly, one of the most beautiful I've seen with the crosscut technique. Your artful arrangement of the blocks and addition of the dark fabrics is inspired. Thanks so much for sharing!! I'll share on our FAL fb page – and AQT too. oh and your circle quilting? You're too close to it. From here, it is absolutely perfect! Personally, I think the light on dark fabric just adds to the design.

Wow!! I love this. It was inspired to combine different background colours into the one quilt. The spiral was the perfect way to quilt it. It looks great hanging on your wall.
