Hand applique curves

It sounds my trip to Austin for attending Quiltcon was ages ago and, if I think about it, it is less than two months … Have you also lost track of time lately ?! We are now nearing the end of five weeks of isolation and almost got into rut … The second week had been hard for me though since I felt a bit down. Maybe in reaction to the overflow of energy I felt the first few days … 😉

Luna Lovequilts - Hand applique curves using Freezer Paper - Work in progress

Usually a hand stitching project helps me when I feel depressed. I hadn’t any ongoing project of the kind and decided to start something new. With soothing colours … The layout is not final and I still have to trim the blocks. I cut the backgrounds with a larger seam allowance than usual since I was worried that these cotton / linen fabrics would fray.

I am using a hand applique technique with Freezer Paper that I described in a tutorial if you are interested in having a look. Here is the next batch ready for hand stitching !

I was happy to see in my Instagram feed this lovely quilt made by Thérèse @cotonnade. She used my tutorial for stitching the curves. I love the use of the checkered fabric for the binding ! It is as small quilt, about 23″ (60 cm) per side.

Mireille @le_verger_de_mi also worked with the same technique for this small quilt made out of reclaimed materials (old shirts and sheets, and even threads inherited from an aunt). It is about 21″ (53 cm) per side. Beautiful pictures, quilting related or not, on her Instagram account !

I am going to post a second article about mask making shortly. It will both document the process for myself and answer a few questions I was asked about the measurements. Particularly someone I have no way to contact wanted to know the size of the ties : 2″ x 34″.

  1. These quilts are calling my name, Sophie! Ever since you introduced me to curved piecing I have been enthralled. Keep your chin up!

  2. The time confusion is happening here too. On both fronts – tha QuiltCon seams ages ago and that I totally lose any idea of what day it is. I hope your projects helped to calm you. The pictues look very lovely. And so fun to see the QuilCon socks photo bomb 😉 Sending some strength and love xo Melanie

  3. Oh my, but QuiltCon seems like it was ages ago! I’m so glad it happened safely! You know, I had my last haircut on the Friday before QC, so with short hair, you can imagine how desperate I’m getting for a haircut! I cannot imagine how awful it will be in another month, and more! Ugh! No hair clippers at our house either! Your color combination is so soothing, and I don’t even like tans and browns! ? It’s interesting you would choose to hand appliqué rather than machine piece, but I definitely understand about the soothing nature of handwork! I just finished hand quilting a large quilt, and immediately pulled out a piece of linen, for hand-stitching that will become a pencil case. You’re certainly making lovely things during these long days of self-isolation!
