Quiltcon 2025 – Part I

I know I repeat myself every year … But it was yet another amazing edition of Quiltcon, packed with lovely people, incredible quilts and interesting lectures! In addition to that, I enjoyed more Phoenix this year than I did in 2022.

Je sais que je me répète chaque année … Mais c’était encore une super édition de Quiltcon, remplie de belles rencontres, de quilts incroyables et de conférences intéressantes ! En plus, j’ai mieux apprécié Phoenix cette année qu’en 2022.

Quiltcon is also the opportunity to gather friends, spread out around the world.
New Avenue by Kathy @kathycookquilts is a block based Improv design. I loved the half and quarter inch grids quilting. The back of the quilt looks cool too!

Modern Traditionalism Category

Three of my quilts were juried into this year show, among which Gameplay on display in the Modern Traditionalism category. So glad I happened to meet Coco @ateliercocopatch and Cécile @patchwork_inspirations in person as we have been in touch through social media for years.

Arrow Smith by Cordelia Nance @NotMadeByRobots has an amazing effect! By the way, I liked very much her artist statement which was simply “Walk this way”, succint yet effective.

Small Quilts Category

My second quilt, Twenty-Nine, was in the Small Quilts category, which is varied in terms of technique and style as the only requirement is the size of the quilt.

Mon deuxième quilt, Twenty-Nine, se trouvait dans la catégorie Small Quilts, qui est variée en termes de technique et style car le seul critère est la taille du quilt.

I absolutely loved this fun small piece, County Fair Swing Dance, by Hannah Parks @halfsquarehannah. Beautiful shapes and movement in Back and forth by Liz Kuny.

J’ai vraiment adoré cette petite pièce fun, County Fair Swing Dance de Hannah Parks @halfsquarehannah. Magnifiques formes et mouvement dans Back and forth de Liz Kuny.

I loved the idea and small details with hand stitches in Come Undone by Mary Catherine Longshore. It is based on the traditional Sawtooth Star block in which the maker inserted strips of background fabric to make the star appear shattered.

J’ai adoré l’idée et les petits détails à la main dans Come Undone de Mary Catherine Longshore. Il est basé sur le bloc traditionnel Sawtooth Star dans lequel l’auteur a inséré des bandes de tissu de fond pour donner un effet d’étoile cassée.

Fabric Challenge Category

I am always eager to see the creativity and use of colour in this challenge as all participants work from the same limited selection of fabric. And I really enjoyed it, even though the chosen palette was not my jam. Apparently, people were inspired as there were more than fifty quilts selected by the jury for this category.

Je suis toujours impatiente de voir la créativité et l’utilisation de la couleur dans ce challenge car les participants travaillent tous à partir de la même sélection limitée de tissu. Et j’ai vraiment apprécié, même si la palette de couleur choisie n’était pas mon truc. Apparemment, les gens ont été inspiré car il y avait plus de cinquante quilts sélectionnés par le jury pour cette catégorie.

In_Th_Re_d by Juli Smith @zahada_mod. I love the texture and depth created by the dense quilting using threads of different colours.

Moonshot by Caroline Hadley @geometriquilt.

Urban Equalize by Sarah Ruiz @bysarahruiz and Tales of Timeless Threads by Jen Sorenson @AQuiltingJewel. Both a work on stripes / strips and framed with Stormy, the darkest colour of the selection. The approach and effect are quite different though.

In Clamshell Jamboree, Michelle Bartholomew @michellebartholomew explored the clamshell shape and used a mix of hand and machine quilting. This stunning quilt won the MQG Excellence Award.

Dans Clamshell Jamboree, Michelle Bartholomew @michellebartholomew a exploré la forme de coquille et utilisé un mix de quilting main et machine. Ce quilt original a gagné le prix MQG Excellence Award.

In Cheshire, Steph Skardal @stephskardal pushes the boundaries of foundation paper piecing. The pieces were cut via a laser cutter. It got the second place of the category.

Dans Cheshire, Steph Skardal @stephskardal repousse les limites de la couture sur support papier. Les pièces ont été découpées au laser. Il a reçu la deuxième place de la catégorie.

Another amazing use of the foundation paper piecing technique, Reverb by Michaela Romesburg @michaela_g_romesburg which got the first place. The ring was hand appliqued.

Une autre utilisation incroyable de la technique de couture sur support papier, Reverb de Michaela Romesburg @michaela_g_romesburg qui a reçu la première place. L’anneau a été appliqué à la main.

I made Fragment II in response to this Fabric Challenge. I am not very happy with the result, so it was particularly interesting to read the judging feedback. As noteworthy elements, the judges marked the modern aesthetic, the visual impact and the quilting (execution and design). As expected, I didn’t get a good grade for the use of colour, except they found interesting the use of coral in the binding and how it supports the overall design. They also appreciated the minimalism of the design and the way the quilting intersects the design. Well … good to know!

J’ai réalisé Fragment II en réponse à ce challenge. Je ne suis pas très contente du résultat, donc c’était particulièrement intéressant de lire l’évaluation. Dans les éléments remarquables, les juges ont noté l’esthétique moderne, l’impact visuel et le quilting (réalisation et design). Comme je m’y attendais, je n’ai pas obtenu une bonne note pour l’utilisation de la couleur, excepté l’utilisation de la couleur corail dans le binding qu’ils ont trouvé intéressante car elle soutient le design dans son ensemble. Ils ont également apprécié le design minimaliste et l’interaction du quilting avec le design. C’est bon à savoir !
