Quiltcon – Part II

Though I started in Part I with sharing quilts, Quiltcon is all about the people you meet. So cool to catch up with this amazing group of friends!

Bien que j’aie commencé dans la première partie par montrer des quilts, ce qui est important à Quiltcon c’est les personnes qu’on rencontre. Vraiment cool de retrouver ce super groupe d’amies !

Our group was well represented with ten quilts in the show. Two of them were awarded and two others are featured in Quiltcon Magazine!
More Than Most by Kathy Cook @kathycookquilts is based on the traditional Rail Fence quilt block though improvisationally pieced. She finished it with her signature matchstick quilting, adding a few hand stitching details.

Notre groupe était bien représenté avec dix quilts exposés. Deux d’entre eux ont été primés et deux autres sont inclus dans Quiltcon Magazine !
More Than Most de Kathy Cook @kathycookquilts est basé sur le bloc traditionel Rail Fence mais piecé de manière improvisée. Elle l’a terminé avec son quilting distinctif “matchstick” (en ligne droite très dense), en ajoutant quelques détails avec des points à la main.

Marla Varner entered her Squircle Party, which is a two sided quilt, into the Handwork category. If you are interested in seeing in progress pictures and beautiful photos of the finished piece, I recommend you read the blog post Marla wrote about her project.

I tried to capture the hand stitches she added on her clothes but the picture doesn’t do justice to her work. You definitely should have a look at Marla’s IG account @pennylanequilts to see how she uses hand stitching to mend, reinforce or simply decorate her clothes.

J’ai essayé de saisir les points à la main qu’elle ajoute sur ses vêtements mais la photo ne rend pas justice à son travail. Vous devriez vraiment jeter un oeil au compte IG de Marla @pennylanequilts pour voir comment elle utilise les points à la main pour réparer, renforcer ou simplement décorer ses vêtements.

Speaking of clothes, there is a very cool reel on Quiltfolk IG account @quiltfolk that features quilty fashion among attendees and vendors at Quiltcon. A must-see!

En parlant de vêtements, il y a une vidéo vraiment cool sur le compte IG de Quiltfolk @quiltfolk qui présente la mode “quilty” parmi les visiteurs et vendeurs à Quiltcon. A voir absolument !

Walter by Sarah Hibbert @quiltscornerstone got the third place of the Small Quilts category. To me, it represents well Sarah’s distinctive style with her work in linen complemented by hand stitches.

Walter de Sarah Hibbert @quiltscornerstone a obtenu la troisième place de la catégorie Small Quilts. Pour moi, il représente bien son style distinctif avec le travail du lin complété par des points à la main.

Tara Glastonbury @stitchandyarn had three quilts in the show. Multifarious me (pictured left) got the second place of the Super Scrappy challenge. It is made of scraps, vintage textiles, repurposed sheets and shirts. I appreciated how she used the large areas of the solid orange/red. In my opinion it adds to the design and rests the eye from the busy scrappy shapes.
Pictured right is This way lies imperfection which she entered in the Piecing Category. I like very much the shapes and the variation in the use of fabrics.

Tara Glastonbury @stitchandyarn avait trois quilts exposés. Multifarious me (photo de gauche) a obtenu la deuxième place du challenge Super Scrappy. Il est fait à partir de restes, de textiles anciens, de draps et chemises reconvertis. J’ai apprécié comme elle a utilisé de larges zones d’uni orange/rouge. A mon avis, cela ajoute un plus au design et repose l’oeil des formes scrappy chargées.
Sur la photo de droite, This way lies imperfection qu’elle a entré dans la catégorie Piecing. J’aime beaucoup les formes et la variation dans l’utilisation des tissus.

In a quite different style, Laneways, from the Minimalist category, started as a design for a painted mural which finally and hopefully turned into a quilt!
Tara recently wrote a blog post with great content about the differences between Modern and Contemporary and that I enjoyed reading. Note, however that Contemporary according to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham is pretty different. A reminder it is important to read carefully the category descriptions when submitting work to a show!

Dans un style plutôt différent, Laneways, dans la catégorie Minimalist, dont le design était d’abord destiné pour une peinture murale mais qui finalement et heureusement est devenu un quilt !
Tara a écrit récemment un article de blog avec un contenu intéressant à propos des différences entre Modern et Contemporary et que j’ai apprécié de lire. A noter cependant que Contemporary selon le Festival of Quilts de Birmingham est assez différent. Un rappel que c’est important de lire attentivement la description des catégories quand on soumet un travail à une exposition !

Two Sophie(s) from Switzerland, with both two quilts in the show and both one quilt featured in Quiltcon Magazine. I am afraid it was a bit confusing this year … Actually confusion already started in Geneva airport with our boarding passes inverted in the passports by the agent at the check-in. Which we didn’t realize until we had problems at the last check just before boarding …
Moon lights by Sophie Thomas @softnquilt was made for the Fabric Challenge Category and was selected by the MQG staff to be featured in the magazine. Pictured right, a beautiful colour scheme, with these contrasted and tone-on-tone units, for Abbey road entered in the Improvisation Category.

Deux Sophie(s) de Suisse, toutes les deux avec deux quilts exposés et toutes les deux un quilt publié dans Quiltcon Magazine. Je crains que ça ait été un peu embrouillant cette année … En fait les confusions ont déjà commencé à l’aéroport de Genève avec nos cartes d’embarquement interverties dans les passeports par l’agent au check-in. Ce que nous n’avions pas remarqué avant d’avoir des problèmes au dernier contrôle juste avant l’embarquement …
Moon lights de Sophie Thomas @softnquilt, réalisé pour la catégorie Fabric Challenge et sélectionné par l’équipe de la MQG pour publication dans le magazine. Sur la photo de droite, un beau jeu de couleurs, avec ces unités contrastées et ton sur ton, pour Abbey road inscrit dans la catégorie Improvisation.

It seems the Sophie(s) are good at keeping secrets as it was only during the travel that we found out we would both have quilts in the magazine!

Il semble que les Sophie(s) sont douées pour garder un secret car c’est seulement pendant le voyage que nous avons découvert que nous aurions toutes les deux un quilt dans le magazine !

Positive was on display in the Modern Traditional section, my first time submitting in this category. Interaction III was made for the Fabric Challenge category.

Pas de photo amusante de moi avec mes quilts cette année ! Est-ce que je deviendrais sérieuse ?! J’espère pas trop quand même …
Positive était exposé dans la partie Modern Traditional, la première fois que je soumettais dans cette catégorie. Interaction III a été réalisé pour la catégorie Fabric Challenge.

Positive is the quilt of mine that was chosen for the magazine. The fun fact is that I got the notification email the evening before the setting of ART-TEX exhibit last October and Positive was already packed to be hung at the gallery. Of course I changed my plans for the exhibit! A kind of stressful week as the deadline for sending the quilt to be photographed was very short and the courier not really reliable … After a few hiccups and head scratching (long story short), Positive arrived at destination one day after the deadline but hopefully they included it anyway.

Positive est celui de mes quilts qui a été choisi pour le magazine. Le fait amusant est que j’ai reçu l’email de notification le soir avant l’installation de l’exposition ART-TEX en octobre dernier et Positive était déjà emballé, prêt à être accroché à la galerie. Bien sûr j’ai changé mes plans pour l’exposition ! Une semaine un peu stressante car le délai d’envoi des quilts pour photographie était très court et le transporteur pas très fiable … Après quelques couacs et arrachages de cheveux (pour faire bref), Positive est arrivé à destination un jour après le délai mais a quand même été inclus.

Fabric Challenge

This quilt by Charles Cameron @feltlikesweets got the third place of the Fabric Challenge Category.

Ce quilt de Charles Cameron @feltlikesweets a obtenu la troisième place de la caétogorie Fabric Challenge.

Alpha is an alphabet quilt in which Sarah Ruiz @bysarahruiz evokes each letter using only square and quarter circle blocks. I love that the letters are not all apparent at first sight but that you can recognize an alphabet when looking at the overall design.

Alpha est un quilt alphabet dans lequel Sarah Ruiz @bysarahruiz évoque chaque lettre en utilisant seulement des carrés et quarts de cercle. J’adore le fait que les lettres ne sont pas toutes apparentes au premier regard mais qu’on peut reconnaître un alphabet quand on regarde le design dans son ensemble.

Beautiful hand appliqué work and use of negative space in this quilt by Sara Brown @sarabquilts, inspired by blowing bubbles.

Beau travail d’appliqué main et d’utilisation de l’espace négatif dans ce quilt de Sara Brown @sarabquilts, inspiré par des bulles soufflées.

That was fun to see how diverse were the quilts in this category though we all started with the same fabric selection. The same block repeated with slight variations in Strike Slip by Carla Resnick @carlacclemon.

C’était sympa de voir la diversité des quilts dans cette catégorie alors que nous sommes tous partis de la même sélection de tissus. Le même bloc répété avec de légères variations dans Strike Slip de Carla Resnick @carlacclemon.

I liked very much how Linda Branting played with different spacing and orientation in her grid quilting design.

J’ai beaucoup aimé comment Linda Branting a joué avec différents espacements et orientations dans son dessin de quilting grille.

Beautiful texture achieved by a dense quilting with the addition of metallic thread to give a little sparkle in this interpretation of the challenge by Sarah Muslim Lefebvre @sidestitchesdesign.

Handwork & Texture

Steph Skardal @stephskardal densely quilted first the whole background fabric and then placed and appliqued by machine the circles.

I particularly liked how Pachy Sarmiento @pachyquilts added small stitches for the transition between two colours. And I love the colour palette!

I always admire how Clara Stoikow @bimbambuki_blog add texture to her work whether it be with thread or the fabric choice. Here is Breathe, a minimalist mini quilt made with grey denim strips and a piece of knit fabric quilted with a silver thread.

J’admire toujours comment Clara Stoikow @bimbambuki_blog ajoute de la texture à son travail que ce soit avec du fil ou le choix des tissus. Voici Breathe, un mini quilt minimaliste réalisé à partir de bandes de tissu jean gris et d’une pièce de tissu mailles quilté avec un fil argenté.
