Quiltcon 2022 – Part 1

Quiltcon, the convention dedicated to Modern Quilts, was held in Phoenix (Arizona) this year and I had the chance to attend it again. It is my favorite quilt show not only for the unique quilts, the ambiant enthusiasm and the lectures (I attended eight !), but for the positive and friendly atmosphere that makes it so special. So I am going to start this recap by sharing the work of my friends.

Quiltcon, la convention dédiée aux Modern Quilts, a eu lieu cette année à Phoenix (Arizona) et j’ai eu la chance d’y participer à nouveau. C’est mon exposition favorite non seulement pour les quilts originaux, l’enthousiasme ambiant et les conférences (J’ai assisté à huit !), mais pour l’atmosphère positive et amicale qui la rend si spéciale. Donc je vais commencer cette récap par le travail de mes amies.

Quilting Friends

Kathy Cook had five quilts in the show and one got the second place of the Improvisation category, but I had a crush for her Planet Triangle quilt. Probably because of the cute rocket ship she added upper left ! More of Kathy’s work @kathycookquilts.

Kathy Cook avait cinq quilts dans l’exposition et l’un d’eux a obtenu la deuxième place dans la catégorie Improvisation, mais j’ai eu un coup de coeur pour son quilt Planet Triangle. Sûrement à cause de la petite fusée qu’elle a ajouté en haut à gauche ! D’autres travaux de Kathy @kathycookquilts.

Our friend Tara Glastonbury who lives in Australia couldn’t come since the borders were not yet open at the time. She was with us in spirit though and will have a bunch of souvenir pictures … The result is a bit freaking but we had a lot of fun taking pictures of ‘her face’ everywhere :-))
She had two quilts in the show. Pictured left, Sugarbag entered in the Hexagon Challenge category.

Notre amie Tara Glastonbury qui vit en Australie ne pouvait pas venir car les frontières n’étaient toujours pas ouvertes à ce moment là. Elle était avec nous en pensée cependant et aura un tas de photos souvenir … Le résultat est un peu flippant mais on s’est bien amusées à prendre des photos de “son visage” un peu partout :-))
Elle avait deux quilts dans l’exposition. Sur la photo de gauche, Sugarbag inscrit dans la catégorie Hexagon Challenge.

She submitted the second one, Positively Square, in the Handwork category. It is made of upcycled denim and is tied and hand quilted. If you are interested in making this quilt, Tara wrote a pattern that is available in her Etsy shop. More of Tara’s work @stitchandyarn.

Elle avait soumis le deuxième, Positively Square, dans la catégorie Handwork. Il est réalisé à partir de jeans recyclés et est noué et quilté main. Si vous êtes intéressé à réaliser ce quilt, Tara a créé un modèle qui est disponible dans sa boutique Etsy. D’autres travaux de Tara @stitchandyarn.

Marla Varner had also two quilts hanging in the show. One in the Piecing category, Tiny Bubbles which quarter circles were pieced by hand. Pictured right, Crevices which is hand quilted with perle cotton (though not visible on my picture … ) was in the Handwork category. More of Marla’s work @pennylanequilts.

Marla Varner avait aussi deux quilts dans l’exposition. Un dans la catégorie Piecing, Tiny Bubbles dont les quarts de cercle sont piécés à la main. And two quilts accepted for Sarah Hibbert as well!
Sarah was also there for promoting her book From Collage to Quilt, published by Lucky Spool editor. The printing has been a bit delayed and unfortunately the final version wasn’t ready in time for Quiltcon but it should arrive in March. I will tell you more about the book later, in a dedicated post.
And there is more to come … Sarah will have a solo exhibition of her beautiful work at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham this August. More of Sarah’s work @quiltscornerstone.

Sarah était aussi là-bas pour la promotion de son livre From Collage to Quilt, publié par l’éditeur Lucky Spool. L’impression a été un peu retardée et malheureusement la version définitive n’était pas prête à temps pour Quiltcon mais elle devrait arriver courant mars. Je vous parlerai plus longuement du livre dans un article dédié.
Et ce n’est pas fini … Sarah aura une exposition solo dans le cadre du Festival of Quilts de Birmingham au mois d’août. D’autres travaux de Sarah @quiltscornerstone.

Piecing and Small Quilts categories

481 quilts were accepted in the show this year, distributed in 12 categories. If you are interested in knowing the breakdown by category, you can read this blog post written by Steph Skardal. She provides for comparison the numbers of the last four years.

I saw amazing quilts. I wish I had made several of them and I came back home with new ideas and inspiration. So I feel very honoured that I had five quilts accepted in this show (the maximum allowed per person!). In addition to that, my Spotlight quilt was chosen to be featured in Quiltcon magazine !
I submitted my quilts Spotlight and Gelateria in the Piecing category. Due to their size, Interaction and Road Trip were by default part of the Small Quilt section.

481 quilts ont été acceptés dans l’exposition cette année, répartis en 12 catégories. Si vous êtes intéressé de connaître la répartition par catégorie, vous pouvez lire cet article écrit par Steph Skardal. Elle fournit pour comparaison les chiffres des quatre dernières années.

J’ai vu des quilts fantastiques. J’aurais aimé avoir fait plusieurs d’entre eux et je suis rentrée à la maison avec de nouvelles idées et de l’inspiration. Donc je me sens vraiment flattée d’avoir eu cinq de mes quilts acceptés dans cette exposition (le maximum autorisé par personne). En plus, mon quilt Spotlight a été choisi pour être publié dans le magazine Quiltcon !
J’avais soumis mes quilts Spotlight et Gelateria dans la catégorie Piecing. De par leur taille, Interaction et Road Trip faisaient par défaut partie de la section Small Quilt.

Fabric Challenge

I really enjoyed seeing the Fabric Challenge category this year. This was my first time participating and I made specifically Moonlight for the challenge.

J’ai beaucoup aimé voir la catégorie Fabric Challenge cette année. C’était ma première participation et j’ai réalisé spécifiquement Moonlight pour le challenge.

Ruby Star Fabrics

I am a fan of Ruby Star fabrics and loved so much how they decorated their booth! The super market of your dreams … Jars of quilter vitamins, boxes of sewing time, special product that cleans the mess in your sewing room, … :-)) Close-up pictures on their Instagram account @rubystarsociety.

Savannah, Nashville, Austin and now Phoenix … The location of Quiltcon changes every year so it is a good opportunity for discovering new places. We love walking around town on the lookout for Street Art works. This one was painted by Hugo Medina aka Hugos Art. I don’t know the story behind this mural, but it just resonates with me thinking of current events …

Savannah, Nashville, Austin et maintenant Phoenix … Le lieu de Quiltcon change chaque année, c’est donc une bonne occasion de découvrir de nouveaux endroits. On adore marcher en ville, à la recherche d’oeuvres de Street Art. Celle-ci a été peintes par Hugo Medina aka Hugos Art. Je ne connais pas l’histoire derrière cette murale, mais elle me parle en ce moment quand je pense à l’actualité …
