Quiltcon 2022 – Part 2

Applique Category

Make Something by Clara Stoikow. The background is made from denim scraps and the bright yellow appliqué text is an elastic band. A good reminder to hang in your sewing room for people who are always overthinking … 😉

Make Something de Clara Stoikow. Le fond est réalisé à partir de restes de jeans et le texte jaune vif appliqué est une bande élastique. Le texte signifie “Crée quelque chose”, un bon rappel à suspendre dans son atelier de couture pour les personnes qui réfléchissent trop … 😉

This quilt by Emily Watts, Radioactive Flying Donuts is really cool and I love the title too !

Ce quilt de Emily Watts, Radioactive Flying Donuts est vraiment cool et j’adore le titre aussi ! A traduire par donuts radioactifs volants.

Hexagon Challenge

A few months back, when I read that the theme of the Challenge category was Hexagon, I straight away imagined a traditional Flower Garden quilt and could not think of something else. It was stunning to see the modern take on this pattern and the creativity of the participants.
Two of my favorites were Variant No 6 by Lauren Mabry pictured left. And on the right, Cherries by Caroline Hadley, inspired by Frea Buckler, a british artist and printmaker that I also follow.

Il y a quelques mois, quand j’ai lu que le thème de la catégorie Chalenge était Hexagone, j’ai directement imaginé un motif Flower Garden traditionnel et je n’ai pas pu penser à autre chose. C’était étonnant de voir l’interprétation moderne de ce motif et la créativité des participants.
Deux de mes préférés étaient Variant No 6 de Lauren Mabry, sur la photo de gauche. Et à droite, Cherries de Caroline Hadley, inspirée par Frea Buckler, une artiste anglaise dans le domaine de l’impression dont je suis aussi le travail.

Handwork Category

I love to see how modern quilters use hand stitches in their work. On the left, The Jinx by Danielle Robbins (entered in the Minimalist Design category) won Quilting Excellence award. It was her first original design and her second hand quilted piece ! Impressive, right?
On the right, another black and white piece, Double Arch by Georgia Dunne in the Handwork category.

J’adore voir comment les quilteurs modernes utilisent les points à la main dans leur travail. Sur la gauche, The Jinx de Danielle Robbins (inscrit dans la catégorie Minimalist Design) a gagné le prix Quilting Excellence. C’était son premier design original et sa deuxième pièce quiltée main ! Impressionant, non ?
A droite, une autre pièce en noir et blanc, Double Arch de Georgia Dunne dans la catégorie Handwork.

37 quilts were on display in this category which is more than twice than in the previous years. Probably a side effect of lockdowns and home isolation these past two years 😉
I think Double Ruby Ring by Michelle Bartholomew was my favorite of the category. The texture created by the big stitches and the use of different colour threads was gorgeous. The design was inspired by the traditional Double Wedding Ring quilts. Each block was hand pieced using EPP method.

37 quilts étaient exposés dans cette catégorie ce qui est plus du double par rapport aux années précédentes. Probablement un effet de bord des périodes de confinement et d’isolation à la maison de ces deux dernières années 😉
Je crois que Double Ruby Ring de Michelle Bartholomew était mon favori dans cette catégorie. La texture créée par les grands points de quilting et l’utilisation de fils de couleurs différentes était magnifique. Le design est inspiré des quilts traditionnels Double Wedding Ring. Chaque bloc est piécé à la main avec la méthode anglaise (EPP).

Squares With Concentric Organic Shapes by Carolina Oneto. She first machine quilted a grid and then, in each of the 750 squares thus created, she hand quilted a small circle. If you plan to attend the European Patchwork Meeting in September, you will be able to see Carolina’s solo exhibition, as part of the Latin American textile artists invited.

Si vous avez prévu d’aller au Carrefour Européen du Patchwork en septembre, vous pourrez voir une exposition personnelle de Carolina, dans le cadre des artistes textiles d’Amérique Latine invités.

Laura Loewen

I love how the hand stitches complement the machine quilting on Mended Mountains, made by Laura Loewen. This quilt got the second place in the Modern Traditionalism category.

J’adore comme l’ajout de points à la main complète le quilting machine sur Mended Mountains, réalisé par Laura Loewen. Ce quilt a reçu le deuxième prix de la catégorie Modern Traditionalism.

Poof, There It Is was entered in the Improvisation category. After hand quilting it, Laura added hand tied wool yarn, then felted into ball shape.

Poof, There It Is était inscrit dans la catégorie Improvisation. Après l’avoir quilté à la main, Laura l’a noué avec des fils de laine, feutrés ensuite en forme de boule.

More hand stitches

Guacamaya for Matilda by Patricia Sarmiento. I met Pachi in Nashville in 2019 and that was nice to see her again in Phoenix! This quilt was made for her daughter and is a nod to Venezuela’s culture and national colours, her home country.

Just a few hand stitching lines and it makes all the difference! This picture is a close-up of Free Wheeling by Laurie Sheldon (Improvisation category).

Juste quelques lignes de quilting main et ça fait toute la différence ! Cette photo est un détail de Free Wheeling by Laurie Sheldon (catégorie Improvisation).

Modern Traditionalism Category

As defined on the MQG website, the quilts entered in this category ‘must modernize a traditional block or quilt pattern with modern design elements’.

Pictured left, Rockwood by Erin Kroeker. On the right, Burnt Out Star by Tina Curtis, based on the traditional Sawtooth Star quilt block. Because of the colour choices and placement the star appear to be fading in the background

Selon la définition sur le site web de la Modern Quilt Guild, les quilts entrés dans cette catégorie doivent moderniser un bloc traditionnel ou un motif de quilt avec des éléments de design moderne.

Sur la photo de gauche, Rockwood de Erin Kroeker. A droite, Burnt Out Star de Tina Curtis, basé sur le bloc traditionnel Sawtooth Star. De part le choix et le placement des couleurs, l’étoile semble disparaître dans le fond.

A beautiful colour combination, stripes and HSTs … New Years Kiss Quilt by Taylor Krzeszowski was a favorite in this category. If you are interested in making this quilt, she wrote a pattern that you can find here. There is also a pattern available for Rockwood on Erin’s website.

Une magnifique combinaison de couleurs, des rayures et des HSTs … New Years Kiss Quilt de Taylor Krzeszowski était un de mes préférés de cette catégorie. Si vous avez envie de réaliser ce quilt, elle a publié un modèle que vous pouvez trouver ici. Un modèle est aussi disponible pour Rockwood sur le site web de Erin.

I had a crush on this one since I love the checkerboard pattern! I’m Blue made by Cordelia Nance.

Comme j’adore le motif damier, j’ai eu un coup de coeur pour celui-ci ! I’m Blue made de Cordelia Nance.

I mixed different patterns in my Road Trip quilt including the checkerboard pattern, though it is not obvious on this picture because of the framing (the main goal was a ‘souvenir selfie’ … ). This quilt sold at Quiltcon and I hope it will bring joy and energy to the new owner!

J’ai mélangé différents motifs dans mon quilt Road Trip, dont le motif damier, bien que ce ne soit pas évident sur cette photo à cause du cadrage (le but principal était un selfie souvenir … ). Ce quilt a été vendu à Quiltcon et j’espère qu’il apportera gaieté et énergie à son nouveau propriétaire !

Near Phoenix

We had the chance to visit Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter house near Phoenix. Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect and designer, who played a significant role in modern architecture. Though he is well known in the US, I found out about him just a few years back, while searching for information about Art Deco era. Art Deco was the theme for our group challenge in 2017, and I chose to make a quilt inspired by one of the stain glasses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In Taliesin West, you can also see glass artworks made by Dale Chihuly that were added to the property.

Nous avons eu a chance de visiter, Taliesin West, la résidence d’hiver de Frank Lloyd Wright près de Phoenix. Frank Lloyd Wright était un architecte et designer américain, qui a joué un rôle important dans l’architecture moderne. Bien que très connu aux Etats-Unis, je l’ai découvert seulement il y a quelques années alors que je cherchais des informations sur la période Art Deco. Art Deco était le thème du challenge de notre groupe en 2017, et j’avais choisi de créer un quilt inspiré d’un des vitraux dessinés par Frank Lloyd Wright. A Taliesin West, on peut aussi voir des oeuvres en verre réalisées par Dale Chihuly, qui ont été ajoutées à la propriété.
