Quiltcon 2023 – Part II

Welcome in the second part of my Quiltcon 2023 recap. In case you missed the first part, you can read it here.

Bienvenue dans la seconde partie de mon article sur Quiltcon 2023. Si vous l’avez manquée, vous pouvez lire la première partie ici.

Group Quilt

For this quilt, Sashes by Elizabeth Ray, each member of the group was asked to make an Improv two-color column. Looking back at previous years, I think it is my all time favorite quilt with that kind of approach and I am really glad it got the first place of the category.

Pour ce quilt, Sashes de Elizabeth Ray, chaque membre du groupe devait piécer de manière improvisée une colonne bi-colore. En repensant aux années précédentes, je pense que c’est mon quilt préféré entre tous, construit avec ce type d’approche et je suis vraiment contente qu’il ait reçu la première place de la catégorie.

Full Circle by Audrey Esarey (additional piecing by Bob Bosscher, quilted by Carson Converse & Jen Broemel) is another group quilt though the approach is different. The quilt circulated through the group for the different steps of the process from designing to finishing, as well as hand dyeing the fabrics, piecing and quilting.

Full Circle de Audrey Esarey (piécé supplémentaire de Bob Bosscher, quilté par Carson Converse & Jen Broemel) est un autre quilt de groupe mais l’approche est différente. Le quilt a circulé dans le groupe pour les différentes étapes de la conception à la finition, en passant par la teinture main des tissus, le piécé et le quilting.

Each artist added their touch and signature style to this collaborative quilt. On the pictures below, you can see other work by Jennifer Broemel and Carson Converse. On the left, The Sun Goes Down Alone by Jennifer Broemel @jen.broemel which was on display in the Handwork category. On the right, Untitled 1-2022 by Carson Converse @carsonconverse which got the second place of the Minimalist Design category. This is a wholecloth quilt using a hand-painted fabric and densely quilted.

Chaque artiste a ajouté sa touche et son style personnel à ce quilt collaboratif. Sur les photos ci-dessous, vous pouvez voir d’autres travaux de Jennifer Broemel et Carson Converse. A gauche, The Sun Goes Down Alone de Jennifer Broemel @jen.broemel qui était exposé dans la catégorie Handwork. A droite, Untitled 1-2022 de Carson Converse @carsonconverse qui a obtenu la deuxième place de la catégorie Minimalist Design. C’est un quilt wholecloth (en une seule pièce) avec un tissu peint à la main et quilté de manière très dense.

Small Quilt Category

Any quilt with a perimeter less than 120″ is automatically entered in the Small Quilt category regardless of its features (handwork, minimalism, improvisation, …).
The Poetry of Denim by Clara Stoikow got the third place of the category. It was made from scraps and upcycled jeans. Clara played with new and old denim to create contrast.

Les quilts dont le périmètre est inférieur à 120″ (environ 3m) sont automatiquement inscrits dans la catégorie Small Quilt, quelles que soient ses caractéristiques (travail main, minimalisme, improvisation, …).
The Poetry of Denim de Clara Stoikow a obtenu la troisième place de la catégorie. Il est réalisé à partir de scraps et jeans récupérés. Clara a joué avec les vieux tissus denim et les neufs pour créer un contraste.

I love how Stephanie Ruyle used different thread colours to extend the central motif on the neutral background. Color Riot got the first place of the category.

J’adore comme Stephanie Ruyle a utilisé différentes couleurs de fil pour prolonger son motif central sur le fond neutre. Color Riot a obtenu la première place de la catégorie.

Use of Negative Space Category

The category definition was slightly modified as of this year. The quilt design has to incorporate a creative (instead of expanded) use of negative space integrated into the composition of the quilt.

La définition de la catégorie a été légérement modifiée depuis cette année. Le design doit incorporer une utilisation créative de l’espace négative (au lieu d’étendue), intégrée dans la composition du quilt.

Modern Traditionalism

I loved the use of simple geometric shapes and limited colour palettes in those quilts by Caroline Hadley. Avalanche, pictured left, is based on her series of sketches she post every Sunday on her Instagram account @geometriquilt.

J’ai adoré l’utilisation de formes géométriques simples et les palettes de couleur restreintes dans ces quilts de Caroline Hadley. Avalanche, photo de gauche, est basé sur sa série de dessins qu’elle poste chaque dimanche sur son compte Instagram @geometriquilt.

Simple Star by Laura Loewen @quiltfortco got the second place. It is based on the Ohio Star traditional block and is improved pieced.

Simple Star de Laura Loewen @quiltfortco a obtenu la deuxième place. Il est basé sur le bloc traditionnel Ohio Star et est assemblé de manière improvisée.

Log Cabin Quilting Challenge

As my submission into this challenge had not been accepted I was eager to see what the jury selected. I realized that my interpretation was totally different from what they were looking for. And in my opinion, the winning quilts were a bit traditional. So definitely not the right place for my Polka Dot quilt! 😉

Comme ma soumission dans ce challenge n’a pas été acceptée, j’étais impatiente de voir ce que le jury avait sélectionné. J’ai réalisé que mon interprétation était totalement différente de ce qu’ils recherchaient. Et j’ai trouvé que les quilts primés par les juges étaient un peu traditionnels. Donc c’était vraiment pas le bon endroit pour mon quilt Polka Dot ! 😉

Piecing

Applique & Handwork categories

I loved the bold colours and prints in The Brown Eggs and Ham Quilt by Karen Gibson Roc @karengibsonroc . This quilt has both happy and comfy feel.

J’ai adoré les couleurs et imprimés forts dans The Brown Eggs and Ham Quilt by Karen Gibson Roc @karengibsonroc . Ce quilt a une impression à la fois de gaieté et de confort.

This is a detail of Confetti by Diana Fox which got the first place in the Handwork category.

Ceci est un détail de Confetti de Diana Fox qui a obtenu la première place de la catégorie Handwork.

Community Outreach Quilts

For this year Community Outreach Challenge, participants were asked to make a quilt that show a color shift, or gradient, in the piecing. The MQG selected two colorways to choose from. Those quilts are community projects and are donated to a charity or sold to raise funds for nonprofit organizations.

Pour le challenge Community Outreach (action communautaire) de cette année, les participants devaient créer un quilt montrant un changement ou un dégradé de couleurs dans l’assemblage. La MQG avait sélectinné deux gammes à choix. Ces quilts sont des projets communautaire et sont donnés à des oeuvres de charité ou vendu pour récolter des fonds pour des organisations à buts non lucratifs.

Here are some of them. The quilt in the center was designed by my friend Melanie Meyer @mellmeyer from Hamburg and pieced by the German Modern Quilters. A pattern for this quilt is available in Melanie’s shop.

En voici quelques uns. Le quilt au centre a été dessiné par mon amie Melanie Meyer @mellmeyer de Hamburg et piécé par la section allemande de la MQG. Un modèle pour ce quilt est disponible dans la boutique de Melanie.

Judges’ Feedback

In these two posts, as you noticed, I presented the quilts by category. Though I want to point out that the choice of the category may have something personal. I received the judges’ feedback for my entries in the meantime and the negative points they mentioned were about my category choices.

When I submitted my Cityscape quilt, I hesitated between two categories, Improvisation and Use of Negative Space. I finally went for Use of Negative Space because in this quilt I purposefully added background to make some blocks pop. The judges suggested the Piecing category would have been better which I don’t understand at all since this quilt has nothing remarkable about the piecing …

Dans ces deux articles, comme vous l’avez remarqué, j’ai présenté les quilts par catégorie. Cependant, j’aimerais préciser que le choix de la catégorie peut avoir quelque chose de personnel. J’ai reçu entre-temps les commentaires des juges pour mes quilts et les points négatifs qu’ils ont mentionnés concernaient mes choix de catégories.

Quand j’ai soumis mon quilt Cityscape, j’ai hésité entre deux catégories, Improvisation et Use of Negative Space. J’ai finalement opté pour Use of Negative Space parce que dans ce quilt j’ai volontairement ajouté du fond pour faire ressortir quelques blocs. Les juges m’ont suggéré que la catégorie Piecing aurait été plus adaptée ce que je ne comprends pas du tout car ce quilt n’a rien de remarquable au niveau du piécé …

I entered my Impact quilt in the Minimalist Design. Again, the negative note I got is about the category as in their opinion my quilt is not minimalistic. However they didn’t make any suggestion for a better fit … And I have no clue 🙂

J’ai inscrit mon quilt Impact dans la catégorie Minimalist Design. A nouveau, le commentaire négatif que j’ai reçu est à propos de la catégorie car à leur avis ce quilt n’est pas minimaliste. Cependant, ils n’ont pas fait de suggestion pour un meilleur choix … Et je n’en ai aucune idée 🙂

If it again, I still would make the same choices for these quilts but it was interesting to read their feedbacks. And it is maybe something to think more about in the future because it has an impact on the judging process.

Si c’était à refaire, je resterais sur les mêmes choix pour ces quilts mais c’était intéressant de lire leurs commentaires. Et c’est peut-être un point à mieux considérer à l’avenir parce que cela a un impact sur l’évaluation.

Atlanta

I know a lot of Quiltcon attendees were not very pleased by the idea of going to Atlanta. We decided anyway to take four days to visit the city as we did in the past for the other locations. And I was not disappointed. We first toured the city in a sightseeing bus which gave us a little background of Atlanta and a good overview for in-depth visits.

Je sais que beaucoup de participants à Quiltcon n’étaient pas très emballés par l’idée d’aller à Atlanta. Nous avons quand même décidé de prendre quatre jours pour visiter la ville comme nous l’avions fait par le passé pour les autres lieux. Et je n’ai pas été déçue. Nous avons d’abord pris un bus touristique qui nous a donné un petit historique d’Atlanta et une bonne vue d’ensemble pour des visites plus approfondies.

We explored a few districts on foot as we wanted to see Street Art murals. Here are just a few of the many murals we saw!

Nous avons exploré à pieds plusieurs quartiers pour voir des murales de Street Art. Voici juste quelques murales parmi toutes celles qu’on vu !

Next year Quiltcon will be held in Raleigh (North Carolina) and I hope I will be able to attend!

L’année prochaine, Quiltcon aura lieu à Raleigh (Caroline du Nord) et j’espère pouvoir y assister !
